Nuclear Reactor Modelling Engineer

Join us at Copenhagen Atomics as we develop and build a thorium molten salt reactor which only needs refueling with thorium. Copenhagen Atomics is developing a new generation of nuclear reactors designed to provide safe, efficient, and cost-effective energy. Our technology has the potential to significantly change the global energy sector and contribute to a future of abundant, low-carbon energy.

As a company, we value curiosity, flexibility, being self-driven, and the ability to collaborate across disciplines. We encourage our employees to take ownership of their work and to grow both personally and professionally.

Department

The Reactor Design & Approval team is looking for a Nuclear Reactor Modelling Engineer to contribute to the development and analysis of our advanced molten salt reactor technology.
You will work closely with physicists and engineers across the company to develop and validate computational models of the reactor and its systems. Depending on your background, your work may focus on reactor neutronics, burnup and activation analysis or dynamic reactor behaviour.
The role provides an opportunity to work on challenging modelling problems where established approaches often need to be adapted to a novel reactor concept.

You’ll play an important role in

  • Developing and applying computational models to analyse the behaviour and performance of our molten salt reactor.
  • Performing reactor physics and neutronics analyses using tools such as OpenMC, Serpent, or similar codes.
  • Using AI tools such as Claude Code to increase engineering output.
  • Performing CFD and thermal-hydraulic analyses using NekRS, OpenFOAM or similar software.
  • Performing multiphysics analyses coupling neutronics and thermal-hydraulics using Cardinal or similar code.
  • Performing reactor system and transient analyses using system-level modelling and simulation tools.
  • Developing Python-based tools for data processing, automation, analysis, and verification of simulation results.
  • Contributing to the development, validation, and verification of modelling methodologies.
  • Interpreting simulation results and communicating technical conclusions to engineers and physicists across different disciplines.
  • Working with high-performance computing (HPC) resources to perform large-scale simulations.
  • Contributing to technical documentation supporting reactor development, safety analysis, and licensing.
  • Collaborating with the wider engineering team to integrate modelling results into the design and development of the reactor.

To succeed in the role, you

  • Have a Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or a related field, with at least 2 years of relevant professional experience, or a PhD in a relevant field.
  • Have practical experience with at least one of the following areas:
    • Neutronics / reactor physics, preferably using OpenMC, Serpent, or similar Monte Carlo or deterministic codes.
    • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), preferably using NekRS, OpenFOAM or similar tools.
    • Nuclear reactor system modelling and analysis, including thermal-hydraulics and transient analysis.
  • Are proficient in Python and comfortable developing scripts and tools for scientific computing and data analysis.
  • Have experience with Git and modern software version-control practices.
  • Have experience with C++ or a willingness and ability to work with C++ based scientific software.
  • Have experience working with high-performance computing (HPC) environments.
  • Are comfortable working with complex physical systems and translating physical problems into computational models.
  • Can work independently while collaborating effectively with physicists, engineers, and software developers.
  • Have excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Have good written and spoken English skills.

Experience with molten salt reactors, liquid-fuel reactors, or other advanced nuclear reactor concepts is considered a strong advantage.
